Animals:

BC has a wide range of animals. Our coastal waters bring abundant sea life, birds and mammals of all shapes and sizes. This post is going to cover some of the aquatic life, aerial life and terrestrial animals that you may encounter.

The Ocean

Our coastal waters have a wide range of animals that live here all year round as well as some that migrate to other areas for feeding or bringing up young. The larges we are going to find are of course whales. Orcas, Grey Whales and Humpbacks. Although they don’t pose any real threat to humans always give them their space and be respectful. They may not want to eat you, but they are very big and deserve their distance.

We have an array of seals, sea lions, otters, sharks, dolphins, porpoises as well jellyfish and a plethora of crustaceans. Check out this YouTube video that explores some of our less visible under water friends.

Birds

British Columbia is host to a multitude of flying animals such as Eagles, Hawks, Falcons, Vultures as well as many other smaller birds. On vancouver island just outside of Duncan you can visit the Raptor centre and actually be up close and personal with some of these hunters.

Catherine Babault has some great images of many other types of birds. Please check out her website

Avibase has a huge list with clickable links to see pictures and get info on birds of vancouver island. Very cool!!

Mammals

Bears, wolves, coyotes, foxes, cougars, squirrels, racoons oh my.. the list doesn’t stop there.

Discover Vancouver Island has a lot of great images and information on our local wildlife.
